Q rewriting: Using the Claim Questions to Generate Ideas for a Position Paper. This assignment is a preparation for your Argumentative (Persuasive) Essay. You should already have a topic and issue chosen. For example: You may have chosen the topic: "The Environment and Sustainability." Your issue or subject you would like to research under this topic is the benefits of solar power. So you are simply breaking down a very general topic into a more specific subject/issue. Answer the following questions that will explain your working thoughts regarding your topic and the direction that you are choosing to follow in developing an argument strategy. No quick answers here. Think each one through. 1. Write your issue in the form of issue questions. Example: Is solar power affordable for the average American? 2. Apply the following claim questions to the issue question and write a paragraph in response to each question below: Fact: Did it happen? Does it exist? Definition: What is it? How can we define it? Cause: What caused it? What are the effects? Value: Is it good or bad? What criteria will help us decide? Policy: What should we do about it? What should be our future course of action? 3. Read the paragraphs you have written, and select the one that interests you the most and that also seems most promising as the focus for your paper. Now look at your tentative claim and revise it, if necessary, to bring it in line with your new purpose and focus. You may, of course, also use information from the other paragraphs you have written to develop sub-claims and support for your paper. I will review this assignment and give you some feedback on your chosen issue, so be as thorough as possible.
